Bucky hear's Chase's 'That's... not good.' and smiles slightly. "It's fine, really. I'm used to it." he says, surprising himself. He normally never even looks at his metal arm during conversations or interactions with other people. When Chase tells him that he should probably get it checked, he laughs dryly. "By who? No one would take me in. No one would know about my arm anyway. Unless they were the HB... uhm, never mind." Bucky says hurriedly, rubbing the back of his head.
That was close. Dangerously close. That was one of the reasons Bucky had decided not to get close to anyone again. And here he was, completely ignoring two of his most important rules to himself: never get close to anyone and never talk about your arm. He notes the steadily increasing silence as the two men turn down an avenue into a quieter part of the city, even though it is still in the centre. He doesn't do anything to break the silence, feeling the cool breeze blow through his hair. As they pass a hairdresser, he thinks about getting it cut.
"Why I'm living around here? Oh, well, no friends or family anywhere. I used to be a teacher at the local school, but that burnt down, and now I'm with the rest of the mercenaries at St Agnes. We get paid to do things like being bodyguards." Bucky explains, his eyes moving around to scan the area out of habit.

i'm carrying your light That's the problem with Bucky- he's used to things that nobody should be used to. Things like pain, like people trying to take a swing at him. He's used to the hungry stares of the people downtown, used to drunks lying passed out on the pavement. He seems to think that because he's "used to it" it doesn't matter that it's a problem. "I don't know, a doctor? Where else?" Chase snaps before he can stop himself, angry that Bucky doesn't seem to get why this is an issue. He immediately feels bad for lashing out, and he opens his mouth to apologize when Bucky's words hit him and his brain stumbles. "Why wouldn't they know anything about...?"
"You...didn't get your arm from a doctor..." he realizes, saying the words quietly, and mostly to himself to repeat the information. He's had questions about Bucky this entire time, ones that he's been too afraid to ask, but suddenly there are a thousand more. Chase has inferred a lot of things about Bucky and his past in their short time together, but this seems a lot worse than anything he'd thought of. If he didn't get his arm from any doctor, where had it come from? Bucky had started to say something...the HB- Chase's brain immediately autocompletes the fragment to HBES, but he ignores it. That's just his paranoia about what could be happening back home. Besides, they weren't in the business of replacing arms (or...taking them?), or, at least, to Chase's knowledge, they aren't. They're still focused on killing half-bloods. They wouldn't care about a human like Bucky. It occurs to Chase that he doesn't really know if Bucky even is a human, but it's statistically more likely, and he's too afraid to ask after his last mistake.
Chase pretends to ignore his discoveries about Bucky as they keep walking, but it's clear he's uneasy. He's a little tense, and though he relaxes a little when Bucky talks about why he's in town, there's still a tightness to his muscles that lingers. He's not walking as close to Bucky as he was before, either, and it's not because he's afraid, but now he is a little more put off by the man. "That's pretty cool," he says, sounding perhaps too interested in an attempt to cover his otherwise noticeably different behavior. Chase doesn't like the word mercenary. He doesn't like the way Bucky uses it so casually. "Has anything ever happened while you were guarding somebody, or is it always just rich people being paranoid?" He mentally slaps himself. That came out a little more rude than he had intended. LAIKA OF ADOXOGRAPHY

Bucky smirks at Chase's sudden lash out. He is again, used to it, and feels fine with it - almost happy. He knows that people need to vent out their anger on something - someone like him. Someone who doesn't show that much emotion and so doesn't need an apology and just understands. 'Why wouldn't they know anything about...?' Crap. Bucky's train of thought skids sideways and he nearly dies at Chase's next comment. 'You... didn't get your arm from a doctor...' He barks forced laughter, rubbing the back of his neck and clearing his throat.
"No, no, I got it from... um, I used to work in the army, see? And I, uh.." he trails off, pretending to be deep in thought, while all the while mentally stabbing himself for being so reckless and stupid. When did I become so careless? he thinks to himself, eyes fixated on the ground in front of him. He hopes Chase hasn't mentally figured out what the end of the fragment HB means. If so, he needs to move, and fast. But Bucky still believes, with however much doubt, that people don't think that he is a halfblood. The sliver of hope is there, just needs to be dealt with.
The black swan's wings are tense - extremely tense. They're starting to become a little squished under his jacket, but he numbs himself to the extra weight and focuses on what Chase is saying. "Oh, sure, little incidents here and there. Someone really did try to rob my client once. Another guy was shot in the leg. It's not that unusual though. Don't think too much of it." Bucky's a little scared he's starting to sound like a hippy; but, to be honest, he doesn't give a damn if he is. It's better than being an assassin.

i'm carrying your light Chase nods at Bucky's explanation, faking acceptance of it, when truly, he doesn't really believe a word. No, he doesn't know anything about the army, but he still feels like doctors should know how to fix Bucky's arm, even if it was provided by the army. Aren't there therapies and treatments for veterans? Besides, HB-whatever the rest of the acronym was doesn't sound like any department of the army Chase has ever heard of before. He can't say for sure whether Bucky is lying or not, but it seems likely to him. Either way, Bucky doesn't need to know that Chase thinks that, at least, he doesn't need to know just yet.
He'd give his tail to know what the rest of HB is supposed to be. He still thinks that the idea of HBES is only lingering because of his own worry, and yet, he's still wondering whether that's what Bucky was about to say. That's not really possible, though, is it? He wonders if he'll work up the courage to ask, since it keeps bothering him.
"Yikes," Chase says. "And you're just...totally unfazed by that, huh? Wow." He makes sure to sound impressed, rather than worried, but there's probably a hint of something in his voice that betrays it against his will. He scrubs his face with his left hand for a moment, then moves it to the back of his neck with a sigh as he shoves his right into his pocket.
"Alright, I'm sorry about this," he starts, uncertainly, but it's going to eat at him if he doesn't ask. "I'm not buyin' it. You don't have to be honest with me, since, y'know, we've only just met, but...it's been bothering me." He laughs a little, but it's nervous. "It sounds stupid now that I think about it, but you weren't gonna say HBES, were you? It's just the only thing I can think of." He exhales again, feeling like an idiot. "Oh, wow, that really does sound ridiculous. You don't have to answer that, I'm just being stupid." LAIKA OF ADOXOGRAPHY

Bucky's shaky breathing becomes regularly timed breaths as Chase nods. He can, however, see in the other man's face that he doesn't believe Bucky at all. It was what the halfblood was trained to do, after all. The fact that the black swan nearly said HBES is making Bucky extremely tense and anxious, and he fiddles with the hem of his black shirt.
"Ha, yeah, it's pretty daunting when you first join up. TJ, the owner, is nice enough, though. It's pretty hectic actually." Bucky says, brushing a stray lock of hair behind his ear. He continues to listen to Chase, and when he starts saying 'Alright, I'm sorry about this,' the black swan keeps his green eyes fixated on the ground. He listens to Chase carefully, but keeps his eyes on the ground, walking forward slowly.
"I'm not surprised that you didn't buy it, to be honest." Bucky says after a while, thinking about what to say. "It's just... I had to say something, right? And it's not like I could say the other thing... uh, ahem." he clears his throat, fidgeting again with his shirt. "So, well, I might've, sort of - you know what, I'll just be straight with you. You seem like a pretty nice guy, anyway. So... I was going to say HBES, yes. Uhm..." he hadn't thought this through. "Why?"

i'm carrying your light "Oh," is all Chase says once he hears Bucky's answer. Something seizes Chase's chest when Bucky confirms his suspicion. It's easy for him to explain to himself why the thought of Bucky being involved with the HBES unnerves him. It means that either Bucky is a halfblood, like him, though, that can't be too likely, since they've given him an arm. (They could have taken it away in the first place if that's the case, but Chase can't figure out why they would give it back.) On the other hand- maybe he's some sort of agent or ally to them. Maybe they gave him the arm so he could hurt halfbloods with it. That should be a little far fetched, even to Chase, though, right?
He fumbles for a while when he hears Bucky's question. It is a pretty good question, actually. Why had he asked? The problem with answering honestly was that it'd reveal he was a halfblood, and at this point, there's a chance that Bucky isn't the type to really take that all too kindly. He asked because he wondered if Bucky was affiliated with them, and now that he still doesn't know the answer, he doesn't really know what to do from here.
"Just...wondering," he says, deliberately vague. He doesn't really expect Bucky to tolerate it, but doesn't elaborate anyway. "So, do you work for them?" He's trying to make his own question sound casual, like he's human and couldn't care less what they're doing to countless halfbloods, but if the answer is yes, he might have to book it. "Did they make your arm?" he asks, though what he wants to know is if they took it away in the first place. It's a few moments before he realizes a lot of the questions he's asked are really insensitive. "You really don't have to answer if it makes you uncomfortable- I won't take it personally." Bucky breaths out through his mouth, trying to get the taste of iron out of his mouth. He had been biting on the left side of his cheek for a while and it was now numb and bleeding. He hopes Chase doesn't think that he works with the HBES. That could be a problem. What would his answer be? That he used to, but he didn't want to, and now he isn't? That he hates them? That he's a halfblood and was mind controlled to do whatever assassinations the organisation wanted?
He clears his throat quietly and licks his dry lips, then turns the corner back onto the busy boulevard. 'Just... wondering.' the man frowns slightly at that answer, but doesn't say anything until Chase speaks again. The question makes the black swan's green eyes widen with shock and fear, silently asking why Chase hit the bullseye immediately. "Uh, ha ha, no!" he says hurriedly, rubbing the back of his head. "No, no no. I don't work for them. No I don't."
That might've been too much, but Bucky goes with it. "Uhm, yeah, they did make it, actually. I don't remember when it was put on, though." he says, then realises what he's said and widens his eyes. "Um, I mean, I was unconscious when they tore off - no, sorry, I was asleep when it was replaced." the halfblood suddenly wants to curl into a ball at the memory, but he shrugs the feeling off and flicks his leg instead.

i'm carrying your light Chase raises an eyebrow at Bucky's answer to his first question, getting a feeling that it's more complicated than the other is letting on. He was far too quick to reject the idea for it to be so simple, and though that also leaves Chase curious, he lets it go. It doesn't seem like Bucky is lying, even if Chase is fairly certain he's leaving something out. It seems clear that Bucky is bothered by whatever it may be, judging by how nervous he is talking about it, and for once, Chase feels like it knows enough to keep quiet. There are things he's been keeping to himself, too, after all, things he doesn't want to talk about. Honestly, he's already asked too much of Bucky, anyway.
His eyes widen when Bucky slips though, and his mind latches onto the words that the man instantly tries to cover up. "Tore off?" he echoes, stopping in his tracks and staring at Bucky with fear in his eyes. Bucky didn't mean to say it and Chase certainly wasn't meant to hear it, but what slips most often is the truth, and the thought of that being Bucky's truth terrifies Chase. "W-" he starts, but his voice shakes, the words get tangled around his fear and he has to swallow before speaking again. "W-why would they do that?" And Chase had heard stories and rumours and been given his fair share of threats but this seems so much worse and so much more cruel than anything he could have imagined the HBES were capable of. He starts thinking of his mom, and how she's alone at home because of him, and they could know what she is because of him, and if she gets hurt, or killed, it'll all be his fault and-
He sniffles, and it's pathetic and weak the way he's just standing there with tears threatening to spill out of his eyes but he does it anyway. He tries to wipe the water from his eyes, reminded of the not-so-nice words bullies used to send his way whenever he cried, and he's embarrassed about breaking down in front of Bucky like this, since the man is basically a stranger, but he can't help it. "What did we ever do to them?" he asks nobody in particular, wiping his nose on his sleeve before he realizes his mistake and freezes. He had said it quietly, but he had said it loud enough for Bucky to hear, and his heart stops. He feels like a deer caught in the headlights, he can't move, he can't speak, he just stands there hoping desperately that maybe Bucky didn't hear, or if he did, he won't give him away. Bucky's green eyes dart around to look at the people standing around on the sidewalk, holding phones, laughing and talking together. One of the people glance at him and the man looks back down at the ground, feeling slightly out of place. He feels so open, so naked, so revealed. And to a stranger, too. He's already said so much that the black swan is considering making up an excuse and leaving, when Chase speaks again.
'Tore off?' Oh no. Bucky's pupils dilate in panic and he tries to laugh and wave it off. "Just... a figure of speech." he says quickly. 'W-why would they do that?' The halfblood nearly laughs. Because they found one of the enemy and made it one of them. Because their enemy needed to be torn apart from the inside. Hell if Bucky knew. He was just a puppet, made to be controlled by the HBES and take out any halfbloods - or humans - in their way. "Well, I mean, I- it's not a figure of speech exactly, more like a... why would they do it? Uh, sometimes because they hate the person, sometimes because they need the person..."
Bucky trails off when he says this. Which one was he? He hoped that Chase wasn't putting all the pieces together. At least Bucky hadn't said anything about being an assassin. That would've been an emergency. When Chase sniffles, his heart rate rises again. The black swan couldn't deal with emotional people! He awkwardly rubs the back of his head, glancing at the other man out of the corner of his eye. "Hey, you alright?" he asks, then freezes at Chase's next comment. Was it possible? Was Chase the same as him? A halfblood? Bucky's eyes widen at the thought and he stares at Chase with an expression of shock. "A-are you...?"

i'm carrying your light "No, no- I- I-" When Bucky starts to ask Chase if he's a halfblood he starts to feel like he's about to cry all over again. He can't bring himself to think of an excuse for what he said, though- nothing sounds convincing, even to him, and he has a feeling Bucky would know if he tried to lie in an instant. He feels tears welling up in his eyes because he's so afraid and scared that Bucky is going to tell, just like everyone back home did. They had been his friends, too- Bucky was just a stranger. There isn't any reason he shouldn't tell. "No, no, no..." He wipes his eyes again, trying to hide the fact that he's almost crying.
"I can't believe I did it again," he whimpers, frustrated and angry at himself. He berates himself over and over in his head, you're such an idiot, because how could anyone be so dumb? How could anyone be that stupid? And yet, time and time again, Chase is, time and time again he makes the same mistake that got him into this mess in the first place.
"Don't- don't tell anyone," he manages to say, voice trembling. "Please just- don't tell anyone. I-I can't do this again..." LAIKA OF ADOXOGRAPHY
