give me time and give me space In all his time of travelling, Alec has found that libraries, for the most part, stay the same. It's kind of a safe space- a place where people come to be alone. They're somehow cozy, despite the fact that the flourescent lights are buzzing and that, for some reason, most people have a rather sour look on their face.
It's kind of odd, though. Here, the faces aren't quite as serious, and the people aren't quite as cold. Maybe it's because everyone feels safe here- in haven that is. Alec's blue wings quiver slightly under his shirt, but despite the fact that he could let them out without being immediately pursued by anyone, he decides against it.
Given that he's had a "home" in Haven for six years, most would think it odd that he's never actually been to this particular library, but it was safe to say that he'd been....out of town. For quite a while, actually. He hadn't really been in town for all that long to begin with, though.
He leans back against the wooden seat, and stops clicking through the pictures on his laptop with a quiet sigh. He'll edit them later. He's hardly ever come to a library for the books, mostly for the wifi and a safe space to work, but maybe he should start. New home, new start, new habits. He's still thinking about looking around when he notices somebody walking towards his table. Suddenly his workspace seems a lot more cluttered. Alec's camera is still plugged into his laptop, even though he's taken the photos off of it by now, and there are a few polaroid prints littered about. Oops. Luckily, they're not anything that he feels he needs to hide from prying eyes. Mostly landscapes, city views, and close-ups of plants. Nothing too personal.
He glances up at the person, who by now has reached his table, pausing his music and pulling down his headphones, waiting expectantly for them to say or do something. In the back of his mind, he notes that most of the other tables are already in use, and this one is one of the least crowded left.

Etsuko's blue eyes scanned the bookshelves for the title of a book that would catch her attention. She was carrying her notebook with her as usual just in case she needed to communicate with someone of hearing. She glanced away from the bookshelf for a moment and noticed a guy with a camera plugged into his laptop. Hm? Her eyes shifted from the camera to the screen of his laptop. The black tiger moved a little bit closer to the guy but made sure there was a bookshelf nearby. If he looked at her, she would pretend that she was looking at the books. Etsuko felt guilty for some reason. She felt like a total stalker.. but she just wanted to see the pictures. Little did she know, she got a little bit too close and was standing there at his table. The guy glanced up at her, and she was so mesmerized by his pictures that she didn't even notice him looking at her. Well, the pictures stopped changing. Something was wrong. Etsuko looked at the guy only to find out that he was staring at her the whole time. She thought quickly and opened up her notebook and reached into her pocket for a pencil. She scribbled something in her notebook and showed it to him: Those are really good. Did you take them? Her heart was beating so fast and her hands were shaking a little. Etsuko didn't mean to be nosy. She was just.. curious. Of course, who wasn't? But, the pictures really caught her attention. I-I hope he doesn't think I'm a stalker..

give me time and give me space For a moment, Alec wondered just how long she had been looking at his pictures for. He was flattered by it, of course, as it seemed that she had been observing his work for a while, but it was also somewhat invasive. No harm had been done, though. His more important work was in another folder that he only looked through when he knew he was in a private space. He looked her up and down for a moment with an eyebrow raised skeptically, observing her appearance and demeanor.
She seemed interested in his work, looking at it carefully. Finally, she noticed him staring, and started to write something down hurriedly. 'Those are really good. Did you take them?' She was nervous- he could tell by the way her hands were shaking slightly when she held up her notebook to show him her note. Perhaps she felt guilty for staring. In any case, she seemed nice- there was no reason thus far to treat her poorly, even if the answer to her question seemed rather obvious.
He greeted her with his usual crooked smile, one corner of his mouth lifted slightly higher than the other. "Yep," he said, nodding as well in case she was writing because she was deaf. Alec supposed it could also be because she was mute, but he didn't feel like taking the chance. "With that," he added, gesturing with his thumb to his camera before he started putting all of the prints into a neat stack. "You can look, if you want. I don't mind." He pulled out the chair next to him with his leg and gestured for her to sit, then offered her the stack of printed photos. In case she couldn't hear, he hoped that made his intentions clear.
"Oh- and if you don't mind me asking, why did you write what you wanted to say?" he asked, not wanting to outright ask whether or not she was mute or deaf.

Etsuko was hoping that he didn't think poorly of her. It wasn't like she was stalking him.. but she was being nosy about what was on his laptop's screen. Her black ears perked up from hiding when the guy smiled at her. His smile was a little odd, however, Etsuko didn't mind. In fact, his crooked smile made her smile. Look at me smiling like an idiot.. Her smile was small at first and grew a little bit bigger. Her cheeks turned rosy pink and that made her blush even more. I'm so embarrassed.. Etsuko's blue eyes lit up with excitement reacting to Alec's nod. "O-oh wa-ow!" she blurted out. She watched Alec carefully and tried to read his lips the best she could.
Gestures and body language was something she also took into consideration with hearing people. A gesture to the camera and she shifted her gaze onto it. Hm? What about it? She turned her attention back to the guy, and he was putting all of the prints into a stack. He pulled out a chair for her and she took that as an invitation for her to sit down next to him. Etsuko sat in the chair and looked at the stack of photos that was placed in front of her. "U-um..." She set her notebook on the table and wrote a note to Alec. She showed it to him and it said: "Thank you."

give me time and give me space His mind stumbled for when he spotted her feline ears that he hadn't noticed earlier, forgetting that he was in Haven, and not back in the real world. His smile faltered for a moment and he had to force his eyes away to keep himself from staring. His wings pressed into his back, closing more tightly than they were meant to. What was she thinking, showing everyone that she was a-
But here, that was okay. Everyone was a half-blood. Everyone was safe. Alec thought that he would be able to get used to that thought a little more easily, but apparently not. He quickly covered up his momentary lapse of panic by continuing his smile. It became easier to pretend nothing was wrong when the girl started admiring his photos.
Alec couldn't help but be somewhat proud of his work when the girl seemed impressed by it, even though she had hardly seen any. His smile turned more confident, almost prideful, but he didn't let it get to his head. Pride led to arrogance, and arrogance got you in trouble, if you let it.
Yet there was still something odd, or at least different, about the girl. She hadn't seemed to hear his last question, and she preferred writing what she wanted to say. She was capable of speech- but her speech pattern was somewhat disjointed and warped. Between the reasons Alec could think of, her being deaf seemed like the most possible option. He rummaged through his bag, stopping for a moment to look at the note she showed him. "No trouble at all," he insisted, before pulling out a notebook and pencil of his own. It paid to be prepared- and for once it seemed that Alec hadn't completely over-prepaed. He scribbled a note of his own, and slid the notebook toward her so she could see it.
'Would it be easier for you if I wrote instead of spoke?'

Etsuko watched Alec because she wasn't sure if it was okay for her to go ahead and look at the photos. His smile became even more odd and then it grew bigger. Was there something wrong? The man's smile returned back to normal so she felt like she didn't have to worry... too much about him. That doesn't seem right... I do that as well. I know that kind of.. smile. It really bothered her but she didn't want to pressure him into telling her what was wrong. Even so, he would probably say, "It's nothing." or "I'm okay." Or, it could have been nothing at all. Etsuko decided to ignore it for the time being. She let the guy read her note, and he said something. His lips were moving but she didn't quite get it. She watched him some more and he took out a notebook and pencil. W-what is he doing..? The guy was writing something and slid the notebook to her when he was done. Etsuko read his message to her and she looked disappointed. She wrote in her notebook and showed him the note.
The note: Yes, I'm sorry. I'm deaf.
Etsuko gasped when she realized that she didn't know his name and he didn't know hers. She quickly took her notebook back and scribbled another note, showing it to him.
The note: My name is Etsuko. What's your name?
She left her notebook there for the man to read, and she hesitantly grabbed the first photo that was on top of the neat stack. I guess.. this is okay.. she thought to herself and looked at the photo. Wow.. Etsuko grabbed another photo and looked at the two. These are really good. I used to be good at photography but I don't take pictures like I used to. It made her giggle softly at the thought of her as a little girl. She took pictures of almost everything when she was little.

give me time and give me space He frowned slightly when his note seemed to disappoint her. The reason it might have done so became apparent when he read her note back to him. 'Yes, I'm sorry. I'm deaf.' What kind of people did she live with that would make her sorry for that? It was hardly her fault- and writing was hardly any inconvenience to him, too.
'That's nothing that you have to apologize for. I don't mind writing at all,' he wrote hurriedly, accompanying his note with a softer, warmer smile.
It was then that she realized that she hadn't gotten his name yet- and Alec was all too aware that he hadn't given it. He hardly liked to give his name out- he settled for nicknames, which were just as real, yet for some reason, they didn't feel like it. A fake name was something else he could hide behind if he needed to. If nobody knew the real one, they couldn't find him later. That was the way he liked it. No strings, nothing real to connect him to the people he met. He never saw them again, anyway, and as he had been somewhat 'on the run' for the past six years, it worked in his favor that nobody was able to find him, even if they went looking.
Etsuko was her name- and it was probably the real one, too. But even though Alec knew he was in a place where it shouldn't matter if anyone knew his, he was reluctant to give it out. It seemed too personal, something too close to his heart. He wasn't ready to give it out again. 'A.J.' he wrote, with practiced ease and confidence. 'Or Jay. Whatever works.' Maybe someday he'd give her his real first name.

Etsuko read his note and felt a little bit more at ease. He was so nice to her and part of her felt like she didn't deserve his kindness. She always felt like a burden to people because she couldn't make it easier to communicate with them. Her mother wanted her to be normal so she was sent to a hearing school when she was little. Etsuko tried her hardest to fit in with the other kids. However, sometimes she would have to ask what they were talking about and when they told her, she couldn't understand it. Her disability also got in the way of group discussions. Everyone was on the right page except for her. Her disability making her a burden became a normal thing. She was used to apologizing for it. Etsuko shook it off, trying to refrain from remembering such things. The past always seemed to bother her. How could she live in the present when she is stuck in the past? That's what she always asked herself. It seemed to make things easier on her to think that way. It even cheered her up and gave her hope that soon enough she would be accepted by others for the way she was. Etsuko waited patiently and eagerly for the man to write his name down or write her a response to her note. 'A.J. Or Jay. Whatever works.'
Note: Jay. I like it. It's nice to meet you, Jay.

give me time and give me space [[ SUPER SUPER LATE SORRY ]]
Of course she had to like his name- it made him feel worse about not having given her his first name. His grin faltered for a moment before he brought it back and gave a shrug. 'My parents thought they had a sense of humor...' he wrote, then he took off his jacket. He knew he needed to get more comfortable with showing others his wings if he was going to fit in here better- and it was the least he could do to make up for the name business.
He hadn't cut slits in his sweater, but there were some in most of his shirts so that she could clearly see his wings poking through. He expanded the one next to her slightly to show off the rather-recognizable color patterns, then closed it again.
'Get it? Blue jay. Jay. They thought it was hilarious. My full middle name is Jayden, though.' He almost slapped himself for his slip- mentioning that it was his middle name. Alec would hopefully be able to make something up if she asked what his first was. Maybe he'd just wink and not say it at all. Some girls really were into the mysterious guy- he didn't completely get it, but it usually worked when he used it on those that were becoming too curious at the coffeeshops he frequented. He slipped his jacket back over his shoulders, hiding his wings so that it was impossible to tell that they had even been there at all.
'And you? I see feline ears-' He paused in the middle of writing to point at them with his pencil. 'Panther....?'

'My parents thought they had a sense of humor...' Hm? Etsuko looked at Jay and blinked her blue eyes curiously. Jay took off his jacket and revealed his wings to her. His wings were so pretty and blue. The colors black and white were also recognizable in the pattern. 'Get it? Blue jay. Jay. They thought it was hilarious. My full middle name is Jayden, though.' Jayden is his.. middle name? The black tiger wondered what his first name was but she didn't think much of it. She thought that maybe he hated his first name and went by his middle name like some people did. Etsuko giggled and wrote in her notebook and pushed it to Jay.
Note: It is kind of funny. It's cute, too!
'And you? I see feline ears-' 'Panther....?'
"Hm..." she hummed slightly and wrote down her response to that.
Note: Black tiger.
