i've learned to slam on the brake, before i even turn the key. Sam sputtered when El asked him how he knew the blood on the stranger's face wasn't just her own blood. "How do I- El, of course I know it's not hers, you can smell it!" he insisted, only realizing that it wouldn't be so obvious to a human a moment too late. "Or- just...trust me on this one, okay?"
She tried to push past him. Secretly he knew that on some level she was right. Though he would have preferred her to stay back, he knew he couldn't really stop her if he tried. His resolve faltered, and he let her pass, even though his mind was screaming at him not to. Besides, one way or another she would have found a way to do it.
As she stepped forward, Sam hang back, clenching his fists so they wouldn't move out of their own will and do something that the rest of him would regret. His gray eyes landed on El, softening slightly for a moment while she couldn't see, then fixed on Anria, cold and fierce. Watching her carefully, looking for any sign of movement or ill intent. He wasn't going to let her hurt El. He let another low growl rumble in his throat, just for good measure.

"Or- just...trust me on this one, okay?" El felt terrible when he said that to her. It was as if she didn't trust him but that wasn't it. Sam let her walk past him and she glanced back at him before turning to the redhead. El took deep breaths to calm herself and she started to walk toward the winged woman. She went over what she would say to the woman in her mind over and over again as she approached her. She wanted to avoid saying anything that could be taken the wrong way. El started to get more nervous the closer she got to the stranger. Should I introduce myself first? Should I ask her if she's okay first? She certainly doesn't look.. okay. Finally, she was standing in front of the woman and she looked into her bluish green eyes.
"H-hi.. I'm El- my name is Elodie.." she said in a soft voice. "We... we lost someone." El said the last part quickly because she was afraid if she thought about it too much, she would start to cry again. Tears formed in her eyes once again but she tried her best to hold them back. "You're a mess..." she said as she studied the woman's appearance and her blue eyes met with hers again. "I'll help get you cleaned up if you want." El got flustered with embarrassment and she averted her gaze from the woman's to the ground. I'm so nervous.. I hope I didn't sound stupid. I'm just trying to help.. I'm really not good with this kind of stuff..

SEARCHING IN THE DARKNESS WE ARE CREATURES OF THE NIGHT RUNNING FROM THE DAY For that moment, the lingering between the other girl's sudden speaking and her single careful step forward, Anria was paralyzed. And then the girl took a step in Anria's direction, and the female therian turned her head at the sound of crunching leaves and breaking twigs. The two exchanged words, and though she did not hear the individual syllables, she understood the general concept of their exchange, and that each remark was about her. Gently, dripping like a leaky faucet, a tiny amount of self-awareness trickled back into Anria, and she looked herself over slowly, turning her hands over in front of her to find dirt stained into her skin and crusted blood under her fingernails. There was more shuffling, and Anria jerked her head up.She blinked rapidly, for the first time afraid that there would be consequences for her lingering. She opened her mouth to assure the two she was leaving, but found herself unable to speak. And then the girl stepped forward, and Anria's gaze flicked over to her cautiously approaching form. The red-head stumbled back a few paces, but then was immobile. She wanted to cry out that the others stay away, hiss at them that she was dangerous, but she could not dare raise her voice to someone so... Someone that... "H-hi.. I'm El- my name is Elodie.." she said in a soft voice. "We... we lost someone. You're a mess... I'll help get you cleaned up if you want." Anria's heart twisted, her head felt heavy. What was happening? And the hawk therian couldn't bear to see this other girl in so much agony, how similar what Elodie said was to what Laura once had. "I'm so sorry," Anria said again, and it must have begun to sound redundant, but she whispered it anyway. Without thinking, she gently, slowly, reached out, cautiously attempting to embrace Elodie, not really sure if it was for her, for the other, for for them both.

Her blue eyes widened a little when the woman stumbled back away from her. El was hesitant and she was at a complete loss on what to do next. For some reason, she was panicking on the inside and her lips parted in slight shock. Her lips parted to say something- anything but she had nothing prepared. El tired to keep herself calm and remind herself why she approached the woman. She wanted to believe there was some good in her and she wanted to figure out what happened to her. If they could figure out who she was and what happened to her, Sam would probably feel more comfortable around the woman. El didn't want him to scare her off nor did she want to scare her.
Her heart started to beat abnormally fast when the stranger got closer to her to embrace her. Oh no.. El was about to flee and hide but she kept telling herself in her mind that it was going to be okay. What if the woman was going to try something sneaky? What if she was dangerous after all? El got rid of those what ifs and embraced the woman back gently, exhaling quietly in relief. "It's going to be okay." she reassured the woman. "It's okay.." El embraced the woman and she peeked around her at Sam, giving him a small wave of her hand. It was her way of telling him that things were going well and they were safe. The hug should have clearly expressed that in its own way.

i've learned to slam on the brake, before i even turn the key. Sam averted his gaze to the ground for a moment when El mentioned that they had lost someone. He didn't think it was a good idea to reveal something like that to somebody who was already so unhinged, but he had a feeling the only real reason he was bothered by it was because he didn't think he could handle being reminded of it. He didn't want to think about it- especially not now. Not when it could be taken as a weakness.
He blinked away the burning in his eyes and fixed them on the stranger once again. He stiffened the moment she made a move, growling louder so that she would remember that if she tried anything she would pay for it. His skin crawled and the hair on the back of his neck raised until he got the all-clear sign from El. Only then did he start to relax, but not by much. He silenced his growl, but contiued to scowl at the stranger, crossing his arms over his chest.
Fine. He wouldn't do anything, if the stranger didn't do anything first. That didn't mean he was happy about any of it. "We should get moving," he said, impatiently, wanting to get as far away from this person as soon as possible.

SEARCHING IN THE DARKNESS WE ARE CREATURES OF THE NIGHT RUNNING FROM THE DAY Elodie's arms felt warm, comforting. For just a moment Anria let herself linger in the unfamiliar, yet intoxicating sense of security and comfort that this stranger gave her. She felt fresh tears well up as she buried her face against El's shoulder. But soppy was not what she had forced herself to be all these years. Anria had learned to become a woman that was strong, independent, and quick to take charge. Though it was not what she was before she put on this mask, it had been permanently dissolved into who she had become. Anria pulled away from Elodie, taking a healthy step back, then wiped away her fresh tears with a sniffle. She forced a warm smile, and finally found the courage to meet both of their gazes. "We should get moving," Elodie's companion insisted. Anria clasped her hands in front of her, unconsciously taking on the persona of "friendly and most-likely-not-going-to-break-your-neck-probably" stranger. "You two can... stay with me, if you'd like," she said humbly, nodding slightly to acknowledge what the other had murmured. "Just until you get your own place of course.. if that's alright with you." She swallowed and blinked almost startled by her sudden... generosity, purity, and kindness. "I'm Anria."

Elodie carefully rubbed the woman's back with one hand to soothe her. Her fingers brushed against the woman's wings lightly and Elodie stopped rubbing her back. She was scared of how sensitive the woman's wings might have been and she didn't want to scare her off. Elodie continued to hug the woman until she pulled away from her. "We should get moving," The blonde perked up when Sam walked over to join them and she looked at him with her gentle blue eyes. Her small smile grew a little bigger and she nodded her. Thank you, Sam.. "You two can... stay with me, if you'd like," Elodie turned to the woman and glanced over at Sam as if she was asking him if it would be okay with him. Either way she would probably get her way with Sam and they would end up staying with the stranger. Is it okay for me to stay here at all? What if the other half-bloods punish Sammy for bringing me here? It absolutely terrified her to even think about the possibilities. Elodie wanted to trust the half-bloods she would meet later on but she also had some doubt. What if they met the wrong ones and they would get mad at Sam for bringing her there? She turned to Sam and walked over to him, turning to face Anria once she was by his side. "Sam... it's rude not to introduce yourself." she said and stared up at him. "Go on." Elodie walked around Sam to where she was behind him and gave him a slight push toward Anria.

i've learned to slam on the brake, before i even turn the key. Sam found himself narrowing his eyes at the stranger's-- Anria, her name was --sudden change of character, finding it suspicious and somehow more worrying than it would have been had her demeanor not changed at all. He didn't like this. Red alarms sounded in his head the moment that she offered them a place to stay.
Bad idea. That was shifty. A hug in a time of need for them all did not make them friendly, and Sam definitely did not want to stay in the house of a crazy-lady. Especially not now- he would be messed up as is without having to worry about being stabbed in his sleep. And...on top of that.
El was human. He doubted Anria knew that, yet- she was a bird half-blood, and they weren't exactly known for their sense of smell. The point was, though, that he wasn't sure how many of the other half-bloods here felt towards humans. It wasn't something about El he wanted to advertise until he knew it was safe enough for her. Living in such close proximity to Anria (even if it was only temporary) provided way too many opportunities for discovery, and Sam wasn't willing to risk that.
Lost in thought, he let out a surprised yelp when El pushed him towards Anria, stumbling for a moment until he caught his balance. He then stood up and crossed his arms again, still scowling. "You basically just did it for me," he grumbled, stubbornly refusing to budge.
"And the answer is no," he continued, referring to Anria's question. "It's a nice offer 'n all, but I think we'll be fine on our own, thanks." He glanced at El, next, knowing that she'd try to argue. "A hug doesn't make her any less of a stranger to us. We don't know her. And on top of that, I can think of about 7 other reasons why that would be a really bad idea." He glanced at Anria for a moment, shrugging as if to say, 'No offense,' but at the same time, he meant full offense.

Why does Sam have to make it so difficult.. she thought and let out a sigh. "And the answer is no," Typical.. "It's a nice offer 'n all, but I think we'll be fine on our own, thanks." Her blue gaze fell to the ground and her heart sunk a little bit. Of course he would decline her offer. Well, at least he declined it in a nice way. It still bothered Elodie because she would have to leave the clearly unstable woman alone. Why? Why do you have to be so cruel?
"A hug doesn't make her any less of a stranger to us. We don't know her. And on top of that, I can think of about 7 other reasons why that would be a really bad idea." Elodie lifted her head up and her usual soft and kind gaze turned into a fiery glare at Sam. "Yes, we don't know her but we also don't know what happened to her! Look at her, Sam! She's clearly a mess and you want to leave her all by herself. How could you be so.. so heartless!" Elodie wanted to help Anria but if Sam refused, she would have to go with him. Will she really be okay by herself?

i've learned to slam on the brake, before i even turn the key. Sam had turned away, about to take a step in the other direction, when suddenly El fired back at him with a fury he wasn't sure he'd ever seen before. Heartless. The word pierced him like a knife, making him freeze in his place.
"Heartless," he repeated the word quietly, weighing it. She thought he was heartless? For looking out for her? "Heartless." He said it again, lowering his head and staring at the ground. The calm before a storm.
The reality was that he just didn't want her to see how much her words had hurt him.
"You think I'm heartless?" he spun around suddenly, masking pain with anger, the way he always did. "Look at her? I'm looking out for you, El! Michael is dead, and the first thing you want to do is waltz into the home of a stranger?" His clenched fists were shaking. "This is the time we're supposed to be taking care of each other, not the time to be going out and making stupid choices like listening to the word of some random person who could be a murderer for all we know!" He paused for a moment, breathing heavily, then lowered his voice so only El could hear him. "You don't even know her, El. You don't know what she might do if she finds out what you are. I'm trying to help you- I'm trying to keep you safe. You're the only one I-"
His voice cracked, and he let his words fall apart. The only what? The only person he had left? The only friend?
The only one he loved?
The sentence had too many endings. He decided it was better not to finish it at all. He averted his gaze, fixing his eyes pointedly on the ground. "I can't lose you, too," he said quietly, his tone almost defeated. "If that makes me heartless, fine. Go. I can't stop you- but I also can't be there to watch you get hurt."
