"You think I'm heartless?" "Look at her? I'm looking out for you, El! Michael is dead, and the first thing you want to do is waltz into the home of a stranger?" Elodie was prepared for Sam to argue back and part of her thought he would give in the end. Sam had her spoiled to death. Of course, she thought she would get her way. It shocked her when Sam didn't give in like she thought he would. She knew it was still wrong of her to talk to him like she did whether he let her have her way or not. His words really hurt her and she was at a loss for words.
It almost seemed useless to argue with him at that point. "This is the time we're supposed to be taking care of each other, not the time to be going out and making stupid choices like listening to the word of some random person who could be a murderer for all we know!" Elodie couldn't believe what she was hearing but she knew that he was right. How could I be so selfish? Anria is a stranger.. Sam and I have been together since we were little. But.. it still feels wrong to do this.
"You don't even know her, El. You don't know what she might do if she finds out what you are. I'm trying to help you- I'm trying to keep you safe. You're the only one I-" It hurt her so badly. Why did I have to pick a fight? I don't like fighting with Sammy... Her heart ached and tears rolled down her warm cheeks. They rarely argued and almost every time they did, El would end up in tears. They were so close and an argument between them was the worst. "If that makes me heartless, fine. Go. I can't stop you- but I also can't be there to watch you get hurt." Oh, that really did it. Her head hung low and her eyes overflowed with tears that streamed down her face. "I... I don't want you to leave me, Sammy." Elodie took a couple steps toward him and lifted her head to look up at him.
"Y-you... you don't want me around any..more? I don't want you to go... Sammy."

SEARCHING IN THE DARKNESS WE ARE CREATURES OF THE NIGHT RUNNING FROM THE DAY She really hadn't anticipated such a blow-up, but perhaps she should have. Sam had made his opinion of Anria clear at the get-go, and she was pushing her luck by inviting them to her home. What was she thinking? She couldn't trust herself with anyone, let alone herself at the moment, and this occured to her as Anria stood there dumbstruck. Every moment the therian opened her mouth to insist that they stop fighting, and that she understood how it was and why they couldn't stay, they were saying something else. After a minute or so of their bickering, she bowed her head and shuffled her feet, uncomfortable being present at an argument that she was clearly not supposed to be hearing. As a bystander, Anria thought that, though the significant portion of their argument was about her, it was most likely fueled by the certain grief the two were feeling. As she saw it, Sam and Elodie were in shock and angry at the world. They were both (as far as she knew) therians, who undoubtedly had been hiding up to that point in an unforgiving world of humans. Someone they loved had just died, and they fled to an unfamiliar place where they were immediately greeted by a clearly screwed-up red head that had, in fact, seriously damaged someone. Anria blinked at her feet when she heard the word murderer. He wasn't wrong. The old Anria would have smirked and flaunted that simple fact, but all she could feel at that moment was ashamed, horrified by all that she had done. Sam lowered his voice then, and maybe he had forgotten or just didn't know that hawks have hearing somewhat better than human's, but she unintentionally picked up on key points in his hushed lecture. Words like "what you are" and "what she'll do" stuck out to her. Anria dismissed everything they were saying; it wasn't hers to hear, and she didn't want to get caught in something unfortunate. At last it appeared they had concluded, or at least Elodie had given in to Sam putting his foot down. Anria looked back up at them, brushed a stray lock of red hair aside. "I, um.. That's alright. I totally get it, uh.." Anria clenched her jaw, unfamiliar with the concept of patience and kindness. "I'm really sorry about Michael." Anria wasn't really sure why she cared at all about the two of them, not yet, not really. But she found herself compelled to protect them, regardless. "You're probably right, Sam, um.. I'm not the best candidate for hosting company right now." She would have added "or ever" but that would probably see a bit too self-pitying, like she was vying for attention.

i've learned to slam on the brake, before i even turn the key. Sam kept his gray eyes fixed on the ground for far too long. He didn't look up- couldn't -not when he knew that El would be crying.
That made some part of him mad. There were a lot of things Sam could handle. There were a lot of things he let El do. She was her own person, and she could be too stubbon for him to even bother with trying to stop her. But the few times when he didn't back down, times like these when he stood his ground, she could do things like this. Play the victim card, even if she didn't know she was doing it. She took his words and twisted them, wrenching them so they'd have an entirely different meaning, and threw them back at him. They hurt.
"El, that's not what-" he began, his eyes still cast down, his voice faltering. "You know that's not what I meant." Didn't she? Didn't she know him better than that by now? He didn't want to leave El. He'd never want that. But if she was going to do something that could get her hurt, he wasn't going to support it by going with her. He wasn't going to be there to watch it happen.
He couldn't. If he ever had to watch anyone he cared about get hurt again- get killed again -he didn't know what he would do. He didn't know if he'd be able to handle it. He doubted he would.
For once, Anria's voice was welcome in the midst of his internal chaos, and for once, he didn't mind that she was speaking. This time, her presence and witness to something that was so personal and to something that was leaving him so vulnerable didn't grate on his nerves. It just gave him a moment to rest-- one that he desperately needed. A momet to breathe. To think.
Fine. There was wisdom in her words. And self-recognition of her own flaws, which was something that Sam could respect. So maybe she wasn't just a crazy lady. That didn't change his mind about anything, though- not yet. After a while, maybe, it would, after he had the chance to get to know Anria. But that was only after a while- for the time being, his stance remained the same.
He murmured a quiet, "Thanks," at her comment about Michael, genuinely appreciative of the gesture, though the wound from the loss was still too fresh for it to have brought him anything more than a painful ache in his chest. "Look- even she agrees with me. Do you still want to stay with her?"

"You know that's not what I meant." Elodie knew deep down that Sam would never leave her. However, she was scared that he wouldn't want her around if she made him mad. El knew that he was trying to look out for her and her kindness toward the stranger blinded her. It made Sam look like he was the villain when he was actually the hero. Sam had common sense and El did not. Of course she would have a hard time understanding why he didn't want to go with a stranger. In her mind, she thought that if things went wrong then Sam would save her or they would figure out a way together. Sam couldn't always protect her not even from a place filled with half-bloods- most of them seeking revenge on the human race for ruining their lives.
Elodie was too focused on Sam to notice Anria speaking to them. "Look- even she agrees with me. Do you still want to stay with her?" "I... I want to stay with you, Sam.." It was up to Sam if they stayed with Anria or not. Elodie tried to see it Sam's way and she could understand that he was trying to protect her. After all, she was making stupid choices and not thinking it through at all. It still feels wrong but I don't want Sammy to leave... "We should go now.." Elodie suggested that they get moving and she waited for Sam to take the lead. He was the leader of their small pack of two after all.

SEARCHING IN THE DARKNESS WE ARE CREATURES OF THE NIGHT RUNNING FROM THE DAY Anria gave a half smile to show her empathy when Sam thanked her. It seemed settled, and she was alright with that. The typical, masked Anria would have snickered and called them cowards for refusing her offer. Then again, the usual Anria wouldn't have bothered offering them housing in the first place. She would have probably teased them about the death of their loved one, Michael, making her persona as a heartless woman, to put it politely, clear to the new Haven residents. "The more village-esk borough is that way, " Anria said, pointing, then turned her finger about forty-five degrees,s "and the residential housing is that way. You can probably just take your pick of empty houses for the time being, until you file for a home with the Counsel. There's plenty. And most of the neighbors are pretty friendly, and uh.. you can always find my place if you need anything to get you settled." Anria swallowed, trying out a smile. That had been a lot of friendly words for her, and it made her tongue feel funny. She half hoped they would invite her along, but she would have understood if they just wanted some time to themselves now.
