SEARCHING IN THE DARKNESS WE ARE CREATURES OF THE NIGHT RUNNING FROM THE DAY Anria nodded against his shoulder when he spoke about life at home. She could see how having a sibling would be problematic, maybe even the cause of a therian family's downfall. She couldn't empathize with his reflection, however. Anria had been the one to tell a friend of her half-blood nature. If she had just kept her mouth shut, her family might have still been alive. The avian therian bit her lip. That wasn't fair. They would have eventually died - it was inevitable for a therian family to be eliminated. But they would have lived longer. And I might have even been lucky enough to die with them, Anria thought. She didn't feel suicidal - no, she would have found the notion pathetic. She did, however, wish she had never been forced to experience the reality of the world. Anria's heart sort of fluttered when he said he was staying. She should have figured that out by now, considering he was still in haven. Yet Anria couldn't help but feel uneasy when he admitted his stay was likely only temporary, even if longer than a usual visit. The red-headed woman sat up, suddenly self-aware again, and she twisted her body to face him. "You can't leave," Anria demanded, a note of panic twisting into her voice as her bright eyes searched his face.

give me time and give me space Alec blinked in surprise at Anria's outburst when she said he couldn't leave. "I...can't?" he asked her, raising an eyebrow and chuckling nervously. Her words had seemed almost desperate- a request for him to stay, though she said it like he didn't have a choice.
She wanted him to stay. Once he realized that, the thought of leaving made something in him ache
He wasn't sure what to do about it.
"Well, why not?" he asked, the words coming out more harshly than intended. "I don't do well in enclosed spaces. Haven is big but...it's still limited." He paused for a moment, looking down at the floor. "I'd come back. I have to- I don't really have much of a choice. It's not like there's any place for me anywhere else, anyway." Nor anyone. "I'm just...not entirely sure that I could settle into being here all the time." He was quiet a little longer.
"Why do you want me to stay?" he asked, looking at her again expectantly.

SEARCHING IN THE DARKNESS WE ARE CREATURES OF THE NIGHT RUNNING FROM THE DAY At Alec's initial alarmed response, Anria immediately turned away, her cheeks brightly flushed. What the Hell? The same thoughts were coursing through her mind. Why did it matter? What was it to her? Why did she want him to stay? Anria clenched her jaw, thinking that maybe if she tried hard enough she would discover some long-time repressed ability to control time. No luck there. Alec seemed baffled, almost as if he was trying to convince himself that he didn't want to stay as much as he was trying to convince Anria. If she hadn't been so selfish, she would have agreed, encouraged him to go while cautioning him of the dangers outside of Haven. If he had just left it, she wouldn't have said anything; Anria was too embarrassed and confused to make any kind of opposing argument at that point. Yet here she was, put back on the spot again, a monkey expected to perform. Well, okay, that's a touch harsh. She was a hawk expected to explain her justification for why a near-stranger was required to stay in Haven without admitting she had feelings. Feelings? What feelings? For who - er, for what? Anria licked her lips out of nervous habit. Time for some major "b.s."-ing. "I don't... I mean I do but I... I just meant that, you know, Haven's kinda deserted? Right now? And I just thought that... You know, because every one else is so lonely, so they could probably use some company so..." And it was even painfully feeble to her. Anria sighed, hung her head and closed her eyes submissively. "I don't know why."

give me time and give me space When the silence began to stretch between them, Alec felt that strange ache again. The one that he knew the reason for, deep down, but he wasn't willing to admit that there really was a reason at all. Not to himself- never out loud. His heart did not ache- could not. Not anymore. Not after he'd locked it away.
And yet, now it did. It ached when Anria turned away, and for some reason it sank when she fumbled her response, as though it was disappointed when it found out what her reason for asking him to stay really was. Or rather, what it wasn't.
He shouldn't have been disappointed. He didn't know what he'd been expecting. At the very least, though, he had expected honesty. Just a little. After all of...whatever this was, he had thought that maybe they'd be past the point of lying so openly towards each other.
Why had he thought that, though? He'd laid his heart bare, yes, but that didn't mean anything. It didn't mean that they were close at all. This had all been an accident, anyway- he wasn't meant to have been here in the first place. He fixed his eyes on the floor for a moment, trying to reign in his hurt before it became obvious that he actually had been hurt.
All of it melted away instantly when Anria admitted that she didn't know. Maybe it wasn't as complete of an answer as Alec had been hoping for, but it was the truth. He looked back at her, staring for a while, silently.
"Well, it was only a thought, anyway," he said, nonchalantly, as though her words had no effect on his decision to stay or not. "For the time being, at least, I'm not going anywhere." As though her words hadn't mattered to him at all. They had. For some reason, it felt wrong to pretend otherwise. He was quiet for a beat longer.
"We need to get you into bed," he decided, his tone somewhat softer, and more open. "It's late...you've had a long day." He nudged her with his shoulder gently, trying to coax her into moving.

[googlefont="Griffy"][googlefont="Abel"] SEARCHING IN THE DARKNESS WE ARE CREATURES OF THE NIGHT RUNNING FROM THE DAY Something strained in that time between them. It was unsettling, uncomfortable, disorienting. It was like expressing a thought to someone, who then either doesn't hear or neglects to respond; an awkward moment in which you could do nothing but bite your tongue and hope you could forget. That didn't seem like much of a problem to Alec. He brushed off the quick exchange and promptly changed the subject. And Anria didn't want to read into anything too much, but if she understood herself even in the slightest, she thought she might be disappointed. That was more alarming than her moment of embarrassment. Of course in the same sense, Anria was grateful that he was willing to dismiss the whole thing. And it was even more warming that he agreed to stay, even if it wasn't for her. Not that she wanted him to stay for her of course... Because that would be... "Yeah," Anria concurred after a gulp, nodding affirmatively. "You're probably right." When he bumped her shoulder playfully, she couldn't help but feel invigorated, and thus ambivalent. For a moment she hesitated, unsure if her knees would actually hold her. But somehow she managed to push herself off the bench to a stand and turned to face Alec, crossing her arms both for warmth and comfort.
