i'm carrying your light Chase reeled for a moment at her question, simply because he hadn't expected something that could be so private to be asked so bluntly. He blinked several times, furrowing his eyebrows, and this time, he let his smile fall for good. "You're really insensitive, you know that?" he said, crossing his arms over his chest. His mouth shifted from a frown to an outright pout. There were many rude things he could have said that came to mind, and he had to remind himself that she wasn't just a jerk, as much as she tried to seem like it. He wondered, briefly, if he should even justify her question with an answer. Perhaps if he opened up, she might feel a little more motivated to do the same?
He sighed, letting his arms fall and his shoulders sag, before he sat on the bench. There was a noticeable gap in between he and Anria- he was clearly sitting as far away as he could. "I never met my father," he said, staring straight ahead. Frankly, he didn't care. He couldn't miss somebody he'd never met. That was different from not being bothered by it, though. Chase could admit he was a bit bent out of shape about the whole thing, even now. "He left Mom before I was born, after finding out about- well. Yeah. He's human, so, it didn't end well. I guess he was nice enough not to tell anyone about us, though." He paused, lowering his gaze to the ground, and wrapping his arms around himself. It hadn't been his father's fault that Mom died. It had been his. Nobody else was at fault.
"A few months ago..I messed up," he sighed again. "I panicked. I ran away, and a few weeks ago when I came back, she was-" He held himself a little tighter. "Well. You can probably guess." He laughed, but it was quiet and there was a bitter edge to it. "I haven't gotten over it. Clearly. I'm usually a lot nicer, I swear."
"What about you? I don't think you were always this rude, so, what happened. And if you don't want to talk about it, I get it." LAIKA OF ADOXOGRAPHY

Rude? Again, Anria felt herself wanting to crack up, but she muzzled herself. Sort of. "And?" It seemed like that got him to share, however Anria could tell there was something else, some other reason behind his eyes. Perhaps Chase had been waiting for an opportunity to talk things out, try to sort out his thoughts and feelings while bouncing them across someone with little perception of who he was as a person. It could have been a number of reasons, Anria argued, but more likely it was just lost hope, in her, Anria, a lost cause. "Well, that was boring," Anria commented after a few moments, pouting. "Where's the gore? The feels? At least how?" But she sighed, knowing she wouldn't get a further response. After all, apparently it was her turn. Anria had expected a story to be asked of her. After all, it was only 'fair' or whatever. She rolled her head back, appearing as though she were in great thought. She had already decided she wouldn't break so easily, long ago, and she tended to be good at being vague in any case. "Listen, kid," Anria began suddenly, finally, sitting up and making a determined attempt at ruffling Chase's hair. "I'll save you the trouble of listening to an echo and just let you in on the moral of the story. I'm sure it wouldn't surprise you." She leaned closer, having noted the distance between the two, and tried to wedge her face just near Chase's ear, without making contact, but still uncomfortably close, and whispered, "Don't make friends." Then she laughed in his ear, smirked, and flopped backwards again.

teeheehee new template! Anria Chase let his disgust show plainly on his face when Anria asked for details. Anyone who wanted to know more about the whole thing definitely had something wrong with them. It wouldn't have mattered, though, since the truth was that he didn't know all too much about her death itself. That was part of why he couldn't get over it. It was sick, that he wanted to know how exactly it had happened, but for some reason Chase thought it would give him some sort of closure.
There'd been blood- too much. It had been painful. It had happened long before Chase had gone back home. And it had been his fault. He already knew more than he wanted to. He'd been spared the image of her body, but he would have liked to have buried her properly, regardless. He'd make a note to ask for some sort of memorial, later- he'd seen a graveyard somewhere around here.
Clearly, Anria's close proximity had made Chase uncomfortable. It was obvious in the way he tried to inch away. Her breath on his sensitive ears sent chills down his spine, and in the end he actually tried to push her away. "Well, that's cryptic," he commented, slightly annoyed. He could see her point, though. His friends (and he used the term loosely, at this point) had been the ones to contact the HBES. He would say that his mother's death had been their fault, but he knew the blame for that rested on his shoulders. "And....not exactly an answer. You could have just said you didn't want to talk instead of being all edgy. Also- I'm not a kid. I'm pretty sure I'm around your age." He remained quiet for a bit, then started rubbing his arm nervously.
"You know, you don't have to be strong all the time," he said. It was possible that Anria's tough-girl attitude wasn't an act, but even so, it was something that Chase wanted her to know. "If you're hurting about something, don't bottle it up under some sort of mask. To be vulnerable is to be human- or, I guess, in this case, half-blood?" He furrowed his eyebrows, pondering that for a moment. "I still don't believe you're as much of a jerk as you want to to think, so why bother with it?" Anria was probably just hurt, and she didn't know what to do about it.

Anria coulnd't help but note Chase's keen observation. She wasn't trying to fool herself. And as far as she knew, she wasn't bottling anything up. There had been a show she had watched by herself in her room, before everything, when it had all been better. God, what was it... Vampire Diaries! ( Kat) Yeah, and there had been one person that focused on rage to overcome a suffocating grief. It didn't sound as pretty as it was in the show, but Anria surmised that that was the culmination of what she had been doing for a year, plus. Anyway, the hot-headed young woman noted that the term 'kid' antagonized Chase, her successful attempt at making him uncomfortable that brought a sinister twinkle to her eye, and of course his persistance in trying to pry her open. Like some sort of impenetrable clam that couldn't be cracked. Nah, that's a lame connection, Anria decided. She preferred army base. With lead-coated walls, so anyone that tried to enter was harmed. With landmines. And automated nukes.Yeah, that applied better. "Edgy." She laughed, shaking her head. "Well you sure are coming up with interesting synonyms."

omg anria PLS sTOP BEING A CHILD @ anria Chase frowned again at Anria's response, but this time it was out of disappointment as opposed to anything else. It was eerily like the way a parent might look at a kid when they weren't able to understand some sort of new concept- and Chase definitely had a similar reason to be making the face he did. "Really? That's..." He paused to sigh in the middle of his sentence. "That's all you got out of that?" It was more of a rhetorical question- he didn't expect or need an answer. He regarded Anria for a moment more. "Alright. Fine. You don't have to talk to me. I get it. I mean- we've just met. It's okay." There was a light tone of understanding to his voice, and for the first time, it was void of his earlier irritation. He didn't exactly know why he expected Anria to open up to him in the first place. They were strangers to one another, especially with all this hiding behind masks both of them were doing. At least Chase was making an effort to put his aside- she didn't have to return the courtesy.
"Talk to somebody, though," he said, trying to meet her eyes to show he was sincere. "Please. Somebody you trust. And if you don't trust anyone....talk to the wall? Anything. It's better than keeping it bottled up." He turned away from her after that, having said what he wanted to say. He exhaled slowly, relaxing for a moment before standing up. He felt a little more at ease, having talked to somebody else, even if they were acting like a child. He'd given his advice, and whether or not Anria heeded it, he still felt like he had done a little good in this messed up world.
"So...I came out here to walk," he began, stretching his arms as he glanced briefly back at Anria, "and that's what I'm gonna do. I'll get really antsy if I don't. You're welcome to join me, if you want...or not. 'S cool. Whatever you feel like doing. But I'm going to get going..." He took a step forward, then looked back again. He wasn't sure if he should expect Anria to want to come or not, but he felt like he should wait, just in case.

| XD Do you want her to tell him a bit about her past? I'm guessing you have something in mind if she does?|
"Do the voices in my head count?"Anria inquired, propping her head up on her hands and knees for a few moments. "Because they don't listen very well because they're usually screaming in agony. Or maybe those are the echos of my parents or something? I don't know. There've been a lot of screamers, so it's hard to tell." She shrugged as nonchalauntly as though she had been discussing the mere topic of... well, anything less than the slaughter of family members. Anria played with the idea of indulging him, but didn't want to seem pliable. She set the thought away on a well-worn shelf, a story to be snatched and skimmed with ease. She probably wouldn't need it just then, but it was possible that it would be a thriller ending to their conversation. Or a way to convince Chase that she was insane. That would be cool. But the title.. ahem, "female dog" sounds much more appropriate and intimidating than "loony" or any synonym. "Why are you so convinced that I'm bottling up all my feelings, anyway Chase?" Anria pried. "How do you know that I wasn't the one that killed 'em anyway. Maybe I'm a spy, a traitor working for the government? Does it really sound that far fetched? Actually, that wouldn't make a bad resume topic!"

tbh I don't have a specific plan in mind- I was just gonna play it by ear and see what happened @ anria Chase remained silent for a while, letting Anria continue with her questions that he didn't have answers for. Despite her relaxed tone, he was almost certain that she had been hurt by someone, or by something that had happened. Or maybe she just really didn't care. He had almost felt close to getting through to her, yet every time he thought that, she found a way to shut him back out.
Maybe she didn't need help. Maybe Chase was just projecting his messed up problems onto her so he'd feel like he had a reason to be there, so he'd find a scrap of self worth to latch onto. Maybe he was so desperate to find the piece of himself that he couldn't feel anymore that he was willing to latch on the first person he met just to do it.
Why was he so convinced that she was bottling something up? Perhaps it was because he was doing the same thing. He'd shared his story with her, or parts of it- but it wasn't the same as revealing how he felt about it all, was it?
"People like you-" Chase started, and he paused to steady his voice, "-the ones antagonizing other people, trying to bully 'em- they usually have some sort of insecurity they're trying to hide." He would know- he had all too much experience with bullies. "This one kid I knew, Mike, used to make fun of people-" He neglected to mention that the 'people' he bullied included him, almost exclusively. "Called 'em names and stuff, like ugly, but that was because he was insecure about the way he looked. So, he took it out on other people. I think you're doing the same thing."
"Ahm- that's not to say you're a bully, exactly," Chase scrambled, realizing how poorly he had worded that. "But you definitely aren't really being...nice. And a while ago, you got all distant 'n stuff." People didn't always think that Chase noticed details like that, but he always did. He cared enough to, even with strangers. "And the way you said 'don't make friends'. You must have had one, and it didn't end well." Jeez, he felt like Batman, putting all this stuff together, but that's not why he was doing it. "It's not a matter of who you betrayed- I don't think you betrayed anyone -it's a matter of who betrayed you. I think that, secretly, you're still bent out of shape about it." He stopped his little tangent, and started rubbing the back of his neck, nervously.
"That's just...uh- just a theory of course." He snorted, remembering the jingle of one of his favorite YouTube channels. "A game- er- psychology theory. Heheh."

And so she sat there, looking him over, her smirk fading more into a dissatisfied frown. He must have noticed when her eyebrows flicked up and her nostrils flared when he made her out to be a bully, since he immediately corrected himself. With a slight nod, she gave him the "uh huh, that's what I thought" look and let him continue rambling. It was one of two things. He had made assumptions about her - for the most part, from what she caught, it was true, but he had made assumptions about her all the same. Then there was the whole issue about him being right. And pointing out things she had said to defend himself. Or something else. Either way, something bothered her. Anria slapped her knees and made an attempt to throw herself into Chase's lap. "Ok. So I'm bent. And you aren't? And your friends aren't? And all of us aren't? No. We're all misshapen. We've all been screwed over, and everyone pretends it's fine." She shook her head, pressing her lips together and tilting her head, then reached out to flick his nose. "No... No I'm not bottling it all up. I'm just being the best version of myself. I guess I should thank my parents for being burned and bled for me. And I should thank all the people I'd ever loved for wielding the blade."

oh snap, chase, you've been called out...by urself.... @ anria "That's not what I'm saying," Chase began, moving to avoid Anria's attempt at touching him. "Pretending that it's fine is a way of...bottling...it up, though." And he stopped there, because suddenly he felt like he was calling himself out. Wasn't that exactly what he was doing? He didn't do it when he was alone, no, but right then and there he was pretending at least that he wasn't so shaken up he couldn't speak, he was pretending like there wasn't some sort of gaping hole in his chest. Hell, he had even redirected his attention enough from his own problems that he was trying to solve Anria's, instead, even while he was still reeling from his loss.
Maybe he should have been giving himself a pep-talk. Or advice. Or...whatever exactly he was doing, now. He wasn't entirely sure what that was.
"Thanking them is probably the last thing you should do," he said, darkly. "Your friends, I mean- not that they seem like friends at all to me," he added, hastily. Then again, who was he to talk? Hadn't the people he considered friends turned on him, too? Well...not all of them

The hawk half-blood shrugged, returning to her perch on the bench beside Chase. "I wouldn't be here if both my parents weren't mutilated in front of me. Yeah, maybe it is a bit morbid. But I'm stronger because of it, all around. I've trained myself to be better, not a better person, but a better therian by allowing myself to be competitive. The world's always been unfair, so why should we be the opposite?"
