i'm carrying your light It was safe to say that Chase had taken time for himself after that. Time to grieve. To mourn. To adjust. Mom was gone. That was hard for Chase to accept, but he knew that he'd be alright someday. He'd move on. He just wasn't ready to quite yet.
It'd been about two weeks. Chase's home was coming together, albeit slowly. He'd picked a house that reminded him of his latest home (he'd moved a lot, yet they had stayed there the longest), but it was different enough that he wasn't haunted by the flashing images of her blood staining the walls. It was a small, two floor home, with a small living room, kitchen and bathroom downstairs, and a hallway connecting two rooms and another bathroom upstairs. There were boxes scattered around downstairs, some opened, some that Chase frankly couldn't bring himself to look at just yet, and too many of them had been taken from his old house. As far as he knew, people rarely went back, but there were too many things he couldn't leave. It seemed that whoever had been watching his house had given up after he went through the portal. He was a lost cause to them, now, since he'd gone to Haven- hardly anyone came back.
There were less boxes upstairs, since he'd spent more time putting together his own bedroom. He'd had to take apart his bed and put it back together. He'd done it plenty of times before- they'd moved a lot, after all. His hands knew how to put the pieces together even when he'd stopped paying attention. He only realized it was night after he had strung the Christmas lights around his ceiling and put up his glow in the dark star stickers. The Christmas lights were for actual light, other than the lamp on his bedside table- he liked the way they looked. The stickers were something he'd always put up whenever he moved. He always counted them when he had trouble falling asleep. It was sort of a ritual. It felt lonely when Mom wasn't there to help. Chase's heart ached, and he glanced outside.
He didn't recognize those stars. Well- of course he did. He could pick out the constellations, he could name each speck, but he didn't recognize them as his stars, like he always had before. No matter where he and his mom had gone, the stars where the only constant, other than the two of them being together. And now that she was gone, they seemed that much farther away. The neighborhood was quiet. Something in Chase itched- he needed to go for a walk. He sighed, rubbing his right arm, which still ached, but at least it was healing, then made his way downstairs and out the door into the night. He didn't expect anyone to be out, but he would welcome any company. It was about time he started getting out again. LAIKA OF ADOXOGRAPHY

"About time I got a neighbor," she had said to herself as she watched a silhouette scurry in and out of a house several doors down, just at the end of where Anria could see before the road dipped off over a minuscule hill. That had been much earlier. Since, the Poof of Red had performed the typical acts that such a person as Anria would, and as could only be presumed, it consisted of nothing flowery. "Well, other than that one mouse," Anria said through lips of crimson lipstick. The stupid creature had been nibbling on seeds between a field of poppies when Anria swooped down all magestic like and hawk-form, and gobbled it up. She was mostly kind of sure it wasn't a half-blood. Oh, well. "And you're talking to yourself again," She muttered, blowing a bubble with her spearmint mint gum as she tucked her hands into the hem of her dark denim jeans. Her large wings fidgeted against the back of her black t-shirt as though antsy to be used. "Yeah, you should work on that. It's creepy." She was meandering along the dark side of the sidewalk, just takin' it in as any arrogant, dissatisfied red-head would be. The air was brisk as Summer began to fall into well, Fall, and she watched her breath, a ghost in grey, skitter out from her mouth in consecutive poofs. Anria hopped the first step of the new guy's doorstep, stuck a pose, and strutted a couple more steps along before the door swung open and he stepped out. Perhaps he hadn't seen her. Heh. Moron. "Heyya, neighbor!" Anria exclaimed, perching her hands on her knees and cocking her head to elaborate upon her adopted mock-persona. "I'm, soooooo excited to meet you! Oh, em, GEEEE!!!

i'm carrying your light Chase only realized how out of it he must have been when it took him way too long to notice the stranger on his doorstep. He hadn't even seen her when he opened the door, and she had to speak up for him to realize she was even there while he was locking the door. He jumped slightly at the noise, having not expected somebody to be right next to him. He looked her up and down, a nervous habit, and said something clever, like, "Oh." He was quick to correct the mistake as he pulled his keys out of the lock, managing a weak smile and a small wave. "Hi. Didn't see you th-"
Then he realized the tone of her voice wasn't as pleasant as he had originally thought, and his already small grin faltered. It was way too exaggerated to be natural, and it almost sounding mocking to him. While normally he might have ignored it and kept on with his own pleasant greeting as though nothing had happened, he wasn't really in the right mindset to even try to fake it. "Are you...making fun of me?" he asked, smile falling completely. Was it wrong to take it personally? Maybe she was just like that around everyone, but Chase's patience threw itself out of the window even when it normally would have taken something really drastic for that to happen. He stared at her a while longer, starting to frown, before he turned away (a little too harshly), shoved his hands in his pockets and started to walk.
He'd come here hoping for a change. Turns out, half-bloods are just as much jerks as everyone else. Chase stopped, realizing how irrational he was being, and let out a long sigh. "Sorry," he said, though he didn't look back at the redhead just yet. "I didn't mean to be rude. It's been a long week." And yet, it hadn't been long enough. He still felt as raw and hurt as he had the day after his mom had died. He exhaled again, slowly, composing himself and his thoughts, then turned around, facing Anria with a still small, but at least genuine smile. "I'm Chase. Chase Anderson. It's nice to meet you." Now, this, this was the fun part. The returned enthusiasm, only to be halted by realization, slowed by hesitation, then of course darkened by distaste and disapproval. Anria made no intention of being subtle as she pinched her full lips together to keep from laughing. He looked pissed. Perhaps a little bit distant. And not to harsh on such beautiful eyes such as mine, Anria found herself thinking with plenty of sarcasm. Calm down, hormones. The red-head planted her hands on her hips as her signature smirk returned and pivoted on her heel so her gaze followed her new encounter, making no effort to move out of the way as he brushed passed her. If he had kept on walking, she would have effortlessly hovered in the air right in front of him to continue pestering him - actually, she would have found that to be more fun - but he stopped, apparently at mercy of a conscience, poor thing, and spoke in a voice that Anria found to be timid though defensive. Anria folded her arms across her chest and tilted her head to examine him in the darkened lighting of the porch (?). Blatantly refusing to give out her name out of sheer disrespect, the young woman rolled her eyes. "Chase Anderson," she stated, nothing more, and simply stood to examine.

i'm carrying your light Chase tried to quell his temper when he felt anger rising in his chest. It was becoming increasingly apparent that she was fully aware she was being rude, and that she was doing it deliberately. She wasn't even subtle about it- she wanted him to know that she was just toying with him. Something his mom had said, something about not letting them get to you, about ignoring them and walking away, came to mind, but he was having a hard time following that advice now. He felt his eyebrow twitch, and his smile became weaker once more. Having his pleasant attitude blatantly rejected twice within a minute wasn't easy. At this point he was sure what to do.
Keep calm and carry on? Fake it 'till you make it?
"You don't have to be rude," he said, trying to keep the irritated edge out of his voice, and failing. It occurred to him, briefly, that the redhead would be considered by others somewhat attractive, but he never really cared for looks. Her personality so far had proven to be needlessly disrespectful and it threw him off. "And yes, my name is Chase. I just said that." He was grasping at the edges of his restraint desperately, and what was left of it was just enough to keep his tone light enough not to betray his annoyance. "And I still haven't gotten your name? This is usually the part when that happens." LAIKA OF ADOXOGRAPHY

"You don't have to be rude." "I know," Anria responded automatically, shrugging almost innocently. Chase wasn't finished. His expression brought the saying 'blood boiling' to mind, and Anria kind of wondered, in the back of her mind, what would happen if his blood started evaporating. That would be cool. And gruesome. And really cool. Shame it's not possible. Or is it..? "And I still haven't gotten your name? This is usually the part when that happens." "Oh, is it!?" Anria gasped, faking alarm, then adopting a harsh, demeaning smile. "Sorry. I know it's hard to tell, but I'm not very good at making friends." She would gladly have continue evading the question, but she enjoyed being discussed fearfully in the corners of Haven. It was rewarding. And it was hard to be gossiped about if they didn't have a name to discuss. "Anria, but you can call me Your Majesty. But I think we'll be friends, so you can just call me Majesty." Anria winked almost flirtatiously.

i'm carrying your light Not good at making friends? Ha. Right. Clearly, the issue was that she didn't want any. Before he could stop himself, Chase rolled his eyes, muttering a very quiet, "I hadn't noticed," under his breath. At any other point in time, he might have apologized for it, but he didn't exactly feel up to it, given how difficult she was being.
Anria. For a moment Chase lamented the fact that a pretty name had been given to a rude girl. Maybe she hadn't always been so antagonistic, though. If that were the case, Chase might hold out a little more hope of being able to change her attitude, but as of that moment, things were still looking rather grim. Given the circumstances, Chase would rather call Anria 'pain in the neck' but that was something he would keep to himself. He had just enough restraint left to do that.
"Great!" he chirped, masking his irritation with innocent well-meaning. "So, Anria," he continued, smiling as he ignored her request to call her majesty (and therefore any flirtatious meaning behind it), "what kind of half-blood are you? I mean- a bird, obviously, but, ah...other than that." He felt like mentioning his part dog would be a bad idea, given his company. Anria seemed the type to make some sort of 'man's obediant best friend' joke about it, and that was territory Chase would rather not enter. LAIKA OF ADOXOGRAPHY

So he was playing the same game, Anria noted as his voice adopted a venomous tinge. Her smirk grew and she found herself teasing her bright red hair simply because she could. What kind of half-blood was she? Anria thought back to when she had been friends with the traitor. She'd always had to wear bulky t-shirts and thick sweaters to hide her ever-growing gigantic wings. Her best friend, along with everyone she knew other than her parents, would tease her for her choice of attire, especially in the summer when she was sweating half to death and always overdressed to hide her wings. When Anria had told that friend, that traitorous friend, a look of understanding had crossed the girl's face, then bewilderment, then utter horror. Then the HBES had come. Anria jumped back into the present. It occured to her in that moment that her smile had dropped and her eyes had glazed over in those few seconds of reflection. Even her shoulders had sagged slightly. Being in Haven had sapped Anria's ability to be stoic in uneasy curcumstances, and it weighed heavily on her concious. And it was really starting to bug her. Time for a trip to The Away. "White hawk," she responded, vainly masking her change in expression by making it seem like she was disappointed in being the one to tell first. "You aren't going to leave me hanging on your response, are you. Because that would be rather hypocritical, don't you think?"

i'm carrying your light Chase had indeed noticed the way that Anria had seemingly spaced out for a moment. His forced smile fell into a worried frown when he saw he distant look in her eyes, the way they clouded over- he recognized that face. He'd seen it all too many times. On friends, acquaintances, his mother. He'd been making the same face himself more and more as of late.
It was clear that Anria had gone through some sort of lost. It seemed that everyone here had. But that also meant that there was more to her than the arrogant attitude she liked to display on the surface. In the heat of his own anger, Chase had almost that she was human (or, that is to say, a half-blood), too. She was quick to hide her moment of vulnerability, though, and Chase couldn't really blame her.
"Okay, but don't make it weird," he sighed, pretending that he hadn't noticed her moment of character depth. "You seem like somebody who'd make it weird just because. I'm a dog. Gerberian shepsky, I think. And technically, a 'quarter-blood'." He didn't know why he always felt like he had to tell people that, but he did.

Anria raised an eyebrow, but found it within her to ignore the teasing she could have begun in light of his animal shift. That and she found it lame to make jokes when already prompted. After all, impromptu assaults were always more effective and pleasing to watch. But no one said Anria wasn't low. "oooh-kay. Congrats on passing speaking English?" Anria rolled her eyes. "Sounds... interesting. I guess?" (Feels muse dying) Anria flopped back in a bench chair that happened to be there and propped her arms on the back of it. She smiled hauntingly at Chase, scratched under her feathers. "So how'd your parents die?" She said after a few seconds of staring rudely. "I mean, who are we kidding? We're all orphans at this point. Every single one of us having our own pathetic and tragic stories. So. In what sadistic way was your family killed?"
